Our Thai Weekend Whirlwind Escapade

7 December Friday

DAY ONE

Even though this would be our fourth trip to BKK together, Alan and I were full of anticipation.

We roused as early as 430am to shower and get ready to leave for the airport to catch ourf flight to the exciting land of Bangkok! The taxi-driver was early and waiting when we lumbered down with an empty suitcase and he sped us to the LCCT (low cost carrier terminal) in KL , an hour's drive away.

Arriving at LCCT, we were greeted by a mass and mess of people who were all waiting to board different Air Asia flights to various destinations. We joined the queue with the longest people (of cos, knowing our luck) and waited for our turn to check-in. The wait was long and painful and it took all of our patience and most of our sanity to finally reach the counter. By then, our flight AK 880 was almost about to leave. We hiked up our jeans and made a wild dash for the departure gate, only to be greeted by yet another queue. There were no allocated seats for the plane ride and Alan and I were lucky to be seated side by side. Hence, begining our Thai weekend rendezvous!

We arrived at the beautiful BKK airport and checked out of the immigration with much-appreciated speed. After claiming our baggage, we proceeded to have our first meal of the day in the airport. Alan's favourite sticky rice with mango (he berated me for buying only half a mango instead of a whole) and rice rolls wrapped with pork and shrimp were on the menu and we munched on them thankfully.

Why you buy only 1/2 a mango?

The taxi ride from the airport to Paul's (my brother-in-law) apartment in Soi Langsuan 55, Fraser Place was a mere half an hour away and we got through that admist soft snores and gentle nods of our heads. After paying 350baht for the ride (with a 10baht tip the driver initiated for himself), we check-into #29-03.

The interior of the apartment was as lovely as the exterior and we explored the two-bedroom unit with relish and excitement. The decor of Fraser Place is very modern and classy and the facilities provided were state-of-the-art. :) Very nice, Paul!

After freshening up, we left the apartment for Part One of the Itinerary. We made our way on foot to the shrine of the 4-faced Buddha (our main purpose of coming to BKK) and gave thanks for a very wonderful & eventful year. I asked Alan whether he wanted to release some tiny sparrow-like birds caged up and sold outside the temple (More Birds, More Luck- to quote the Indian girl from the American Express advert) but he said no.

Asking for Blessings from 4-faced Buddha

After that, we went to Alan's favourite tailor near Siam Paragon / Novotel Siam Sq and Alan made 4 new pairs of pants (claiming that his were all worn to bits). We dined next door to the tailor at a very popular restaurant Alan had eaten before in. Ahhhh.. The delicious fried fish, chicken wings, Pad Thai, Thai mixed salad, fried pork, and two sweet, young coconuts left our bellies bulging and mouths grinning.. Mmmmm YUM!

Tailoring his pants

Next, we treated ourselves to a fabulous 2-hr traditional thai massage at our favourite HealthLand Spa at North Sathorn Road, St 12. Our aching muscles were kneaded and treated like they belonged to a Thai SEA Games long distance runner who had just won the gold medal. All for 450Baht (Approx SGD $22.50) per head. I LikE!

The Lobby of Healthland Spa
After that rejuvenation, we were raring to go and hopped into a cab and scooted to Chinatown to meet Paul for a much-anticipated dinner at T &K Restaurant, Chinatown. Ahhh.. Let me recount the menu: Sharks Fins soup, Fish Maw Soup, Steamed fish, BBQ huge prawns, fried morning glory (KangKong). *chomp chomp* Too bad I was still reeling from the after-effects of lunch and could not stomach alot. But I washed down dinner with a bowl of birdsnest to ensure long-lasting youth and beauty. hahaa. *excuses, excuses*

After dinner, we headed to Suan Lom night bazzar and made a beeline for the petshops. Ooooo.. There was one REALLY happening pet shop at the fringe of Suan Lom and so many pretty lil pups were inside. We ordered a Gucci and an LV bed for Ash and Jay Jay and bought our 2nd son a cute lil jumper. Then, we proceeded to comb the streets of Suan Lom.

Nothing much to buy but we made home with a cute lil paper mache giraffe I had seen approx 2 years ago in Malacca and quite afew doggie clothes. hahaha. Then, because we were quite stoned from waking up so early that morning and the travelling, we decided to head back to Fraser Place for an early night. A Feast !

The Spoils of my Victories

8 December Saturday

DAY TWO

After a light bf at the restaurant at Fraser's, Alan and I headed to ChaTuChak for some shopping. Both of us hadn't been there in years in avoidance of the human congestion and the heat but we decided to give it a shot!

Does Alan look like a rapper from hell? Artificial Fruits

Just after alighting from our cab and barely having stepped foot into the bazzar itself, I had already purchased 2 pairs of earrings, one t-shirt and 3 caps for our Japan trip. hahaha. Alan and I were astounded and beaming.
This time round, although the human traffic was bad, it wasn't that congested and the heat wasn't that overbearing. We kinda went CRAZY at the animals zone and cuddled many a pup. The doggie clothing sold there was even cheaper than that at Suan Lom and of cos, not to miss out on a good bargain, we BOUGHT SOMEMORE LORH! ahhaha. Jay Jay has a suitcaseful of singlets, sweaters, jumpers, t-shirts etc etc. Ash has a couple too! It was a bit sad to see so many animals all squeezed into cages or being fondled by many hands and suffering in the heat. Very cruel. There were some squirrels tied to the cages too. Lil tiny rabbits in cages. and I even saw a small lil' bat. ;p

We bought many artsy stuff also and some candle holders for our new house in Mid Valley. Of cos the knick-knacks were irresitable and I saw no point in even attempt to justify my purchases because of the cool exchange rate. 1 SGD = almost 23 Baht.

Lunch was at ChatuChak itself, in a fancy but mosquito-infested airconditioned restaurant. I had tasty red duck curry with rice noodles and Alan had a plate of bland horfun. With that sustenance, we were energised and dived back into the snaking narrow alleys of ChatuChak with gusto!

Fresh from ChatuChak

Approximately 5hours after we arrived, we sadly bade farewell to the ChatuChak and headed back to Fraser Place to dump all our spoils of victory. Then we went to the tailor for Alan to try on his pants and then we had dinner at Siam Paragon. The X'mas festive cheer was in the air and there were many people taking photographs of the exterior which was ablaze with many lights. There was even an ice sculptor of a bear/ rat / dunno-what animal!

At the foodcourt, we had our favourite Kaya toast, Taro toast . Very fulfilling! We added on my favourite rice roll (pork) and had some hot milo to complement the dinner.

Then off we went to Suan Lom Night Bazzar. But this time we took the BTS (mrt). The stupid woman (see pic below) at the information counter gave us the wrong information and we had to buy another ticket and take another train before we finally got to our destination! Terrible service! BLEAH!

How to go to Suan Lom kup?!?

On Our first BTS ride in BKK.

We reach Suan Lom successfully in approx half an hour and made a dash for the the cute petshop to pick up our Gucci and LV. haahha.
On the way, I quelled the urge to buy the artificial muffins/scones/buns. O god, they looked so real - they were even FLUFFY!
We ooohhh and ahhhhhed at the two schnauzers in the play pen in the pet shop and comtemplated buying the play-pen itself and shipping it to malaysia. Thank heavens we decided to forgo it - it weighed a tonne!

Then it was off to be treated like a King and Queen again by the sincere and giggly professionals at Healthland. Tonight, we opted for a 3hour pampering - 1.5hrs of traditional thai massage, 0.5hr of herbal heat compress and 1hr of foot reflexology! All for 1000Baht (approx SGD $50) / head. *drools* ok ok i will save for a rainy day! promise!

9 December Sunday
DAY THREE

BF at restaurant in Fraser

We got up and faced the prospect of going back to KL moodily. Then, deciding to make the most of the time left in sunny BKK, we gobbled down our bf and headed to MBK to do MORE shopping. I did my manicure and pedicure for a cool 500baht and we found the cute arty shop which I always buy nice paper and stickers and post-it pads for my students. However, Alan reminded me that I had no more students to buy pressies for already so I promptly put back the cute lil note pads I was planning to buy. hahaha. *occupational hazzard*

We had lunch at the foodcourt and our beefballs were swimming in salty beef stock and the strands of thick beehoon accompanying it could be counted. I was berated by the cleaner for taking photographs in the foodcourt. Wonder what's the rationale behind that rule?
We also wondered why Thais seem to feed like rabbits and as a result, our dessert was a small waffle each. Mine Almond, his Raisin - both tasted alike! Then we went to buy some foodstuff back for our parents - dried longans, porkfloss chips, cashew nuts etc..

We scampered onto the cab which brought us right to the doorstep of Fraser and we spent the next hour showering and trying to squeeze all our purchases into our now-minute suitcase and the extra handcarry bag I had had the foresight to bring.
The check-in counter for our flight AK 887 had not even opened yet when we arrived at the airport at 4pm. We ventured off in search of a light lunch and chose Black Canyon Coffee cafe. Like the name suggested, the coffee was great whilst the
wanton noodles soup and shrimp vermicelli that Alan and I had for lunch made us grimace.

Surprisingly, the plane took off only five minutes behind schedule at 605pm and we arrived at KL LCCT at 905pm, groggy and exhausted but not without a sense of exhiliration at how fulfilling our weekend had been. We definitely will be visiting BKK again SOON, right laogong? heee heee heeeeee.

There was Unrest last night

5 December 2007 Wednesday

Ahhh yes, yet another Wednesday when the movie tickets are priced at RM7/ticket. Whilst anticipating such a great deal, I entertained myself the whole of today by heading down to Hock Choon and buying groceries and also watching quite a few episodes of Tang Xin Feng Bao. Now I understand why my mummy always sits in front of the google box and swipes her eyes with tissue paper. As the horrors of the drama - 1st wife kenna cancer, 2nd wife is a conniving ol' bitch, best friend seduces bf of pal etc etc-unfolded before my very eyes, I sighed uncontrollably and tissue paper started to form mountains in front of the tv screen. In my pursuit of my next drama serial, I shall endeavour to choose something more light-hearted ;p

Anyway, as if reflective of my mood, it was drizzling when I left the house. I got the reception to call me a cab. As the cheerful porter bade me" goodbye ma'm", my mood started to lift until I settled down in the taxi and realised to my horror that the $%#@ driver was SMOKING in the cab. Now, if there's ONE THING I CANNOT STAND, it would be a smoking-taxi-driver.

I rolled down my window furiously and coughed audibly to ensure that my displeasure was expressed. However, he nonchalently continued coating his lungs with tar and flicking the ash outta the window onto the congested roads. I surpressed the urge to tell him off and risk getting carted away to timbaktu (he had the matt look) and gulped and wondered when would the ride be over. Thank God KLCC is so near Lanson!

After what seemed to be forever, we finally arrived at KLCC and I got off thankfully. The 5 minute ride was successful, however, in inflicting me with a pounding headache which was compounded by the fact that the queue for movie tickets was snaking. Anyway, there was no choice, for we had decided on Unrest that night and I was buying tickets for Alan, Nicky, Robin and myself.

Dinner was a quick affair at the foodcourt again and we settled with Thai food which is ironic, since we would be flying off to BKK 2 days later. O well... After chomping down our pad thai and fried tom yum bee hoon, we entered a state of Unrest.

The movie was painful and after the first 5 minutes, the guys started to stir. Well, at least there was a hunkie with great abs, to keep my attention. But there was lots of gore - I'm talking about dissection of a corpse until you can see the rib cage and the likes.. O mi god. We were all quite thankful to leave the cinema once the lights came on.

6 December Thursday

I'm packing for our BKK trip. Our flight's very early tomorrow morning (0750) and we will arrive in BKK at 0855! hahaha. How exciting! We'll be staying in my brother-in-law's apartment next to Chitlom BTM and then will hit the shops/massage parlours/restaurants etc! YES YES YES! :D

and the most fantastic thing is.. JAY JAY will be coming back home with us the day after we come back from BKK! Hahahaa. YAy!

oh my god! I spent my 1 hour kneading the clay, shaping it into a cute lil' mama bear and I just popped it into the oven. But it's BURNT TO ASHES NOW! *sob sob* Where's the husband when u need him?? My bear bear went up in flames! hahaha The whole apartment was smoking (literally) and I was so afraid that the water sprinkler would go off. hahahaa. Sigh. Now Papa Bear has no Mama Bear for company. Damn sad. But since this taitai has nothing better to do. I shall start on a new bearbear now. *pouts* Picture on right shows my burnt Mama Bear..sigh.

Sale at Isetan

Alan's watching dvd after a long day at work. We have just returned from KLCC after dinner. Let me quickly sum up my exploits for today:

After getting really bored surfing the internet for jobs and poking people and doing up my testimonial (for further career usage) and watching dvd, I rouse and left Lanson approximately at 6pm. The taxi-ride was smooth and cost a mere RM3.10. How unusual!

I went shopping before meeting Alan and since Isetan was having a year-end sale, that was the first place I hit. I didn't leave empty-handed. haha. I bought a SODA sweater (for our chilly Japan rendezvous) and two singlet tops (for the BKK shopping experience). All for RM126! Oh dear. The guilt is setting in...

Dinner was also extremely extravagant but well-deserved. Alan and I dined at a Japanese restaurant in KLCC at the top level and we ordered THREE set dinners (tepanyaki beef, teriyaki chicken and teriyaki unagi) and we polished off every single bit! hahaha. This pacified my empty belly which had nothing but 2 slices of toasted bread and some canned soup the whole of today.

A Date with Mrs Siah!

3 December 2007 Monday

I woke up late today, like a true tai tai and pondered over what I should occupy my day with. A manicure and pedicure? A movie? Some shopping? However, as I glanced over at the overflowing cane basket of clothing just waiting to be washed, I sighed and trudged to the laundrette, staggering under the weight of the trusty basket.

I alternated the washing of clothes (1hr) with Tang Xin Feng Bao with spinning the clothes dry (1.25hr). And cooked myself some sphagetti to eat to live. Then I scampered into the bathroom to get ready.

I left Lanson at approximately 515pm and the perenial jam caused me to arrive at Pavilion mega mall (only a stone's throw away) almost half an hour later! Alone, I combed the shops and pushed the advice to 'save for a rainy day' aside for today...After all, I convinced myself, my bonus would be credited this month! haha. My last bonus from MOE. :P

I bought somethings for this wkend's trip to BKK from trusty ol' Watson's and just as I was about to give up hope of assisting the Malaysian economy to reach greater heights, I ventured into Elements. What caught my eyes was the boots on display (I am looking for a pair for Hokkaido). RM119 before 30% off! I tried size 6 and decided that I was actually a 5. My eyes wandered to other pairs of shoes and I realised that I could actually justify more purchases at this store because of the sale! However, there was no size. :( Then I scampered into the fitting room to try on a pair of 3/4s (RM79 before 30% off). Proud that I could still fit into an "S", I skipped off to pay for both items!

OH DEAR! I WAS LATE FOR MY APPOINTMENT!

I ran right down to Mdm Kwan's and there Mrs Veronica Siah was, waiting for me! hehehe. Alan joined Mr and Mrs Siah and I at Mdm Kwan's and we ordered dinner. By a stroke of luck, we discovered during the meal that Mr and Mrs Siah were Alan's neighbours when they were all living in Tiong Bahru! They lived on the 16th storey, Unit 1092 and Alan lived on 11th storey, 1098!!! Apparently Mr and Mrs Siah know Alan's Ah-Ma! hahahaa. After dinner, Alan and I went to our favourite hangout at Petsmore to buy all the doggie stuff for JayJay! We bought a leash, a feeding bowl, waterbottle, shampoo, conditioner etc etc.. EVEN A DOGGIE HOUSE!

A Night out at Central Market & Petaling Street

2 December 2007 Sunday
After our buffet breakfast this morning, Alan fell back into a feverish slumber and I decided to finish watching my dvd "Superbad"(By the way, Gary, the show cannot-make-it lah :P) and more of Zesa's favourite Tang Xin Feng Bao.

Once the laogong started feeling better, the cooped-up wifey suggested that they troop down to Central Market, a building that houses many shops dedicated to preserving heritage and traditional arts and craft. I had surfed the web for "Places of Interest" in KL and that info had surfaced.

Driving there was another headache as, as usual, the roads were jammed, even on a Sunday. *huge sigh* Tension was rife as we swerved in and out to avoid the motorcylists and parts of our anatomy were shown to express our sentiments. At last, after almost half an hour, we arrived at our destination with pursed lips and silent frowns.

At the carpark, a huge stage was erected and some scary-looking head-bangers were shrieking and screeching at the top of their lungs and violating their musical instruments with gusto. We squeezed past an enthralled crowd and strode into Central Market with anticipation.

Central Market is a blue, two-storied building that I was thankful not to have brought the two gin nahs. There were a few 'streets' inside the building that were representative of the different cultures in Malaysia- e.g. Jonker Street, Malay St, Chinese St etc. But nothing held our attention for long except for Old Town Coffee, a cafe not unlike Kiliney Kopitiam in Singapore. We had our caffeine fix here for RM2.20 per cuppa. Ex ah!
Then, after visiting what seemed to be the most expensive toilet in Malaysia (RM0.50 / entry), we decided to be adventurous and brave and venture into the unknown depths of Petaling Street, Chinatown.
PS was only a stone's throw away from our location and very near Puduraya Bus Station. When we arrived we started squeezing our way through the throngs of sweaty bodies, instinctively holding our bags protectively against ourselves. Pangs of insecurity and discomfort emerged as Alan and I quietly and quickly combed the aisles, without stopping to look at the fake Gucci, Prada, LV and the likes. The only stall holders to capture my attention was a wheel-chair bound man talentedly twisting thin wires into dragons, spiders, trishaws and the likes and a sole AngMoh (yes u read it right) hawker peddling cute fruit-shaped magnets (3 for RM10) made in Vietnam.
After a short while, we decided to make our way back to the car (hopefully the Volvo would still be where we parked it) and get away from the stress. What a disappointing trip!
Our next stop last night was IKEA but not for its non-existent meatballs. We wanted to visit the Pet Safari there! It is HUGE and comparable with ours at Vivo City. Same decor and all. There were two little shitzhus and two tiny silky terriers and oooolala a beautiful siberian husky and a cute GRT. *slurps* But ok ok , I better "save for a rainy day". :P

We found a good pet hotel for JayJay (ok we've decided on the name) to stay when we hit the shops in Tokyo and because he is so small and has not had his 3 jabs, he wld probably be boarded in the pet hospital during our absence. The poor dear.. Never mind, we bought him a little shirt though and when we bring him out, he can wear it! HEE HEE. Alan has a similar one.
Dinner was a yummy affair at Dragon-Inn at The Curve. For RM48, we had a bowl of ra-men, drunken chicken, xiao long bao and gingko and beancurd skin. A bit pricey but dollar for dollar as compared to what is sold in SIN. After "mai-tan"ing, we checked out the pasar malum nearby by returned home empty-handed. *sigh* I can't wait to go BKK man ;P
